Causes of Bad Breath

reallybadbreathFinding a cure for halitosis (bad breath) is much easier when you know the cause.I have already gave a few hints at what can cause bad breath above but sometimes it can be the least expected thing that causes a foul oral breath.

Bad breath is mostly caused by the presence of oral bacteria. But there can be other factors that can affect one’s breath. The main factors directly related to bad breath are:

  1. Bacteria found in the mouth.
  2. Conditions that causes bacteria to grow rapidly.
  3. Poor oral hygiene or inability to clean the areas where bacteria reside.

Let’s now see some other factors that cause bad breath.

  1. Food. I’ve said already that spices are main causes of bad breath, there can be also some other foods, you may notice only after consuming them.
  2. Smoking. Everyone knows how smokers have a terrible breath, the odor is related to tar, nicotine and other substances found in the cigarette. These will accumulate in the person’s mouth and thus cause the bad breath.
  3. Gum Disease. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is one of the most common cause of bad breath, it is a bacterial infection located in the tissues surrounding the teeth. Advanced periodontal disease can cause serious damage to the bone that holds the teeth which then create deep spaces (periodontal pockets) between the teeth and gum. These spaces are ideal for bacteria to live in.
  4. Sinus conditions. This is also a very common cause of bad breath. Upper respiratory infections often create postnasal drip that goes down to the tongue, it often has a foul taste and smell. This discharge will often be the food for oral bacteria, who will in turn create smelly waste products.
  5. Rotten teeth. This is pretty rare unless someone has a very had oral hygiene.

To stay away from halitosis, it is a good idea to pay frequent visits to the dentist. At least twice per year.

Make sure your mouth is clean all the time. Don’t forget to check the bad breath report to get more ideas how to stay bad breath free.
